what's a few deep flesh-wounds to a tough guy like Zeke? The ill-considered script also holds very few surprises regarding the identity of the killer: as soon as Detective William Schenk was declared dead without showing how he was killed or why he was chosen, I knew I had my man. Secondly, that bin ain't protecting him - there's glass flying everywhere, but that's okay. Firstly, picking a lock is not that simple - it can be done, but takes practice and time. And I gotta love the following scene for all the wrong reasons: Zeke picks the lock on his handcuffs using a hair pin and then protects himself from high velocity shards of glass using a dustbin. It pumps boiling wax onto the victims face, thus requiring a power supply and some heavy duty equipment, yet is installed without a hitch, no-one interrupting the (presumably noisy) work, and with no-body questioning the presence of such a device. Did no-one making this film question the logic of installing a complex mechanical device above an operational railway line? How long would the device have taken to assemble? Did no trains pass by on those days? Was the third rail electrified the whole time? It's just plain dumb.but not as dumb as the trap that the maniac somehow manages to assemble in a police evidence room. In the opening scene, the trap is situated above a subway line, the victim given the option of losing his tongue or losing his life. Banks is sent parcels in the post by the new killer, leading him from one gruesome discovery to another.

Rock, dreadfully mis-cast, plays Detective Zeke Banks, who is the focus of a campaign of terror by a serial killer who seems to be emulating the infamous John Kramer AKA Jigsaw, only this time the victims are corrupt cops (how topical). While many Saw fans will no doubt be disappointed at the absence of Tobin Bell and John Kramer from Spiral, this was the right move to make for the franchise to evolve and stop clinging to the past.It's quite apt that the the star of Spiral, the latest chapter in the 'Book of Saw', is stand-up comedian Chris Rock, because the film is a joke. Spiral: From the Book of Saw ends with both Zeke and Schenk alive, and seems to clearly be setting up a renewal of hostilities in Saw 10, which was recently reported to already be in development. Schenk hoped his game would end with Banks joining forces with him to finish eradicating the bad cops on the Metro PD, but since he kidnapped Banks' former police chief father and put him in a trap, Schenk's plan doesn't exactly come to fruition in that respect. Schenk begins the film as the new partner of Detective Zeke Banks (Chris Rock), seemingly the only decent cop in town. The new killer is a self-styled moral crusader named William Schenk - or at least that's his alias - who believes Jigsaw had the right idea, but instead of just applying tests to individuals, he seeks to clean up the city's corrupt police force. He's not an apprentice, and he's seemingly never met the man. Not only that, for the first time in the Saw franchise, the killer has no direct connection to John either. John is mentioned multiple times by characters, and some old police photos are shown of him, but that's it. Sadly for at least some Saw fans, John 'Jigsaw' Kramer (Tobin Bell) does not appear in person in Spiral: From the Book of Saw. Did the same hold true for Spiral: From the Book of Saw, or is John Kramer finally gone for good? Even if his screentime was brief, he always managed to make a difference to the plot.

Yet, that hasn't stopped John from playing large posthumous roles in every Saw movie since. Whether they would've done that if they thought their little horror movie would become an enormous franchise is a question worth asking, but in the timeline that did happen, Jigsaw had a built-in shelf life, barring a miraculous and eye-rolling sudden cure. His first appearance in Saw came with a ticking clock, as co-creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell wrote their big bad as being a terminal cancer patient. Of course, Jigsaw, at least not the John Kramer genuine article, literally wasn't long for this world.
